Enhancing Ocean Biogeochemical Models With Phytoplankton Variable Composition

چکیده

Chlorophyll (Chl) is widely taken as a proxy for phytoplankton biomass, despite well-known variations in Chl:C:biomass ratios an acclimative response to changing environmental conditions. For the sake of simplicity and computational efficiency, many large scale biogeochemical models ignore this flexibility, compromising their ability capture dynamics. Here we evaluate modelling approaches differing complexity growth response: fixed stoichiometry, stoichiometry with photoacclimation, classical variable-composition Instantaneous Acclimation optimal resource allocation. Model performance evaluated against observations from time-series sites BATS ALOHA, where composition varies substantially. We analyse sensitivity each model variant affinity parameters light nutrient, respectively. Models are more sensitive parameter perturbations, but inclusion photoacclimation fixed-stoichiometry generally captures Chl better than other variants when individually tuned site using similar sets both sites. Compared including variable C:N ratio perform cross-validation experiments model-specific site; i.e., they portable. typical approaches, instantaneous acclimation, which requires fewer state variables, yields somewhat lower portability fully dynamic variant. Further assessments objective optimisation contrasting stations suggested.

Phytoplankton and iron: validation of a global three-dimensional ocean biogeochemical model

The JGOFS program and NASA ocean-color satellites have provided a wealth of data that can be used to test and validate models of ocean biogeochemistry. A coupled three-dimensional general circulation, biogeochemical, and radiative model of the global oceans was validated using these in situ data sources and satellite data sets. Biogeochemical processes in the model were determined from the infl...

Significance of bacterial biomass in lakes and the ocean: comparison to phytoplankton biomass and biogeochemical implications

We have synthesized the information on marine and lirnnetic bacterial biomass carbon (BOC) and phytoplankton biomass carbon (PhytoC) to examine the relationships between these major biotic carbon pools. On the basis of 6 limnetic and 6 marine studies we found a good similarity for the correlations of BOC vs PhytoC in both systems although the slope was substantially lower than for sim~lar corre...

Seasonality, phytoplankton succession and the biogeochemical impacts of an autumn storm in the northeast Atlantic Ocean

Phytoplankton chemotaxonomic distributions are examined in conjunction with taxon specific particulate biomass concentrations and phytoplankton abundances to investigate the biogeochemical consequences of the passage of an autumn storm in the northeast Atlantic Ocean. Chemotaxonomy indicated that the phytoplankton community was dominated by nanoplankton (2–20 lm), which on average represented 7...
